Trip highlights
- July gave us warm, clear, comfortable travel weather around Long Beach and Los Angeles.
- Staying near the water gave the trip a calmer home base than trying to sleep in the middle of everything.
- A kitchenette helped us make healthier food and save money between restaurant meals.
- Renting a Jeep Wrangler from National at LAX made the July 3 off-road day with friends feel like part of the adventure, not just transportation.
- Ammatoli in Downtown Long Beach was the restaurant I would put at the top of the list.
A few years ago, we took the family to the Los Angeles area around the Fourth of July, and it became one of those trips that still feels easy to recommend. Not because every minute was perfectly planned, but because the pieces worked: good weather, a smart place to stay, the right rental car, friends who knew where to go, and food that made us want to come back.
We used Long Beach as our base instead of trying to make every day start and end in the busiest parts of Los Angeles. That turned out to be the right call for our family. It gave us waterfront views, a little more breathing room, and quick access to a restaurant scene that deserves more attention.
Why Long Beach worked as our home base
We stayed at a Marriott property on the water in Long Beach. The views were a big part of the experience. Waking up near the water made the mornings feel like vacation before we even left the room.
The bigger practical win was the kitchenette. On a family trip, eating every meal out gets expensive fast, and it can also leave everyone feeling heavy after a few days. Being able to make simple, healthier food in the room helped us save money and reset between bigger meals. Breakfast, snacks, leftovers, and easy lunches can make a real difference when you are traveling with kids or trying to stretch the budget.
If I were booking the trip again, I would look for the same combination: a Long Beach waterfront location, enough room to breathe, and at least a small kitchen setup. It does not have to be fancy to be valuable. It just has to make the trip easier.
Flying into LAX and renting the right vehicle
We flew into Los Angeles and rented from National at LAX. They had plenty of options, but we specifically chose a Jeep Wrangler because friends of mine go off-roading on weekends and invited us to join a Jeep day on July 3.
That decision changed the feel of the trip. A basic rental car would have handled the normal driving, but the Wrangler made the off-road day feel intentional. It gave us the right vehicle for the terrain, the open-air California feeling, and a little bit of fun every time we got in.
If you plan something similar, check the rental terms carefully. Not every rental agreement allows true off-road use, and you should know what is covered before following friends onto trails. In our case, the Jeep was part of the experience, but the fine print matters.
The July 3 Jeep day
The off-road outing with friends was one of the highlights. The weather and temperature were just about perfect, and the views were exactly what you hope for when you leave the flat everyday routine behind and get into the hills.
That is one reason I would recommend July for this kind of trip. Yes, Southern California can be busy around the holiday, but the summer weather gave us long days, great visibility, and that relaxed feeling you want from a family vacation. If you are planning outdoor time, morning starts and plenty of water are still smart, but July worked beautifully for us.
Ammatoli: the Long Beach restaurant I would send friends to first
The restaurant memory of the trip was Ammatoli in Downtown Long Beach. Their own site describes the restaurant as Chef Dima Habibeh's celebration of Eastern Mediterranean and Levantine food, and that lines up with how the meal felt: warm, generous, detailed, and full of flavor.
Everything we ate was excellent. If you like baked goods, try the fatayer or the flatbread-style items. If you want something fresh, the salads were refreshing and bright. If kebabs are your thing, you should not be disappointed. And if you are vegetarian, this is the kind of place where hummus, falafel, dips, bread, and side dishes do not feel like an afterthought.
One detail that stood out to me was the olive oil. I do not say this lightly: the olive oil was a 10 out of 10 in my book. When the basics are that good, everything around them tastes better.
For dessert, I went with the kanafeh. It was heavenly, and I liked that it came in an individual size. That made it feel like the right ending instead of a dessert you order only because the whole table is sharing.
Ammatoli was not just a good restaurant stop. It was one of the reasons Long Beach became part of the trip's identity.
How I would plan this trip again
- Use Long Beach as a calmer base: Especially if waterfront views and easier evenings matter to your family.
- Book a room with a kitchenette: It can save money, reduce food waste, and make healthier travel days easier.
- Reserve the rental car around your actual plans: If you need a Jeep or SUV for a specific experience, book early and confirm terms.
- Build in one outdoor adventure: A beach day, scenic drive, or Jeep outing gives the trip a memory beyond standard sightseeing.
- Make a reservation at Ammatoli: It is the kind of place I would rather plan around than hope to squeeze in later.
Budget notes for families
California trips can get expensive quickly, but a few choices helped us keep the trip reasonable. The kitchenette reduced the number of paid meals. Staying in Long Beach gave us views and atmosphere without needing every outing to be a major event. Renting the Jeep made sense because it matched a planned experience rather than being a random upgrade.
That is the money lesson I took from the trip: spend where it changes the experience, save where it does not. A great restaurant, a memorable outdoor day, and a room that makes family travel easier are worth more than spending casually all day because nothing was planned.
The bottom line
If you are considering the LA area for a family summer trip, do not overlook Long Beach. It gave us water views, a practical base, easy food options, and one standout restaurant experience. Add the right rental car and a July outdoor adventure, and the trip becomes more than a checklist of Southern California stops.
For our family, the combination worked: Long Beach mornings, a Jeep day with friends, July sunshine, and Ammatoli at the end of the day. That is a trip I would happily recommend and happily repeat.
